The Pereskiopsis spathulata plant is a species of the Pereskiopsis genus, from the Cactaceae (Cactusaceae) family. Although it does not look like cacti, it is one of the real cacti. It is in the form of a bush and has succulent leaves. Its common names in America and Europe are Alfilerillo and Patilón. Its homeland is around southwestern Mexico. It has little resistance to sub-zero cold. -1C at most, if short lived.
Pereskiopsis spathulata is used as a temporary grafting root plant for the rapid development of difficult cacti. We can call it the surrogate mother of cacti. It is a good example of a graft cacti.
It is of great importance that cactus species that are difficult to reproduce and produce in large numbers in a short time, make them mother and grow them in a very short time. If a small piece as small as a dried chickpea is grafted onto this plant, it will grow very quickly from a slow-growing, not easily rooted, valuable cactus. The growth rate is at least 4 times faster than the actual speed of the cactus species. This is the great importance of Pereskiopsis spathulata. When the cactus grafted on it grows well, it should be separated and rooted or grafted onto another cactus of suitable size. Because the branches of Pereskiopsis spathulata are thin. It is usually the thickness of a pencil. It doesn't get too thick afterwards.
It doesn't need too much heat for it to thrive. It continues to develop unless the temperature drops below 10C. Most cacti need direct sun, but this type can grow well in strong light locations. It does not rot in excessive watering. Its roots are compatible with different soils. It has a high ability to absorb nutrients from the soil. These factors play a role in the rapid growth of the cacti grafted on it.
