Myrtillocactus Geometrization Characteristics
Myrtillocactus geometrizans, or commonly known as Blue Myrtle Cactus, is an easy-to-grow and wonderful indoor cactus.
The beauty of Myrtillocactus geometrizans is its evolving form. It initially grows as a singular columnar cactus that grows towards the sky, but as it matures, it develops multiple candlestick-like branches to form its bush-like appearance.
Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Care
Native to northern and central Mexico, Myrtillocactus geometrizans is much easier to care for than you might think. In fact, it is a great houseplant for cactus growing enthusiasts and even cacti beginners.
Unless you live in a very hot climate, this plant is best grown indoors. In summer, a mature plant needs plenty of direct sunlight, but for younger plants, place it in a sunny location with partial shade to prevent scorching of their delicate stems.
During the winter, this cactus should be moved to a slightly cooler but still bright location with plenty of natural sunlight. Moving it to a cooler location will help encourage flowering the following year.
This cactus is only semi-cold tolerant and will only tolerate temperatures as low as -4°C (22°F) for very short periods.
Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Irrigation
Like most other Cacti, Myrtillocactus geometers don't require much watering. Water abundantly and regularly but infrequently during the summer months. Always allow the soil around your cactus to dry completely between watering.
In winter, watering should be kept to an absolute minimum. Myrtillocactus geometrizans has a summer growing season and is mainly dormant during the winter months. While your plant will continue to grow while dormant, it does so at a much slower rate and therefore requires less water and nutrients. As with summer watering, water only when the soil around your cactus is completely dry.
If your Blue Myrtle cactus' stems or branches look wrinkled and feel soft, it may need water. You may also notice that the spines are dry or brittle and can easily fall off when touched.
Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Soil
Always use a well-draining soil when planting Myrtillocactus Geometrizans. Roots need to be free from excess moisture so that they can get the oxygen they need to thrive.
Use non-peat soil or coconut peat mixed with sand, sand or minerals such as perlite. Planting in the right soil type will promote healthy growth and help prevent root rot and disease.
Flowering Myrtillocactus Geometrizans
You can expect to see small greenish-white flowers from spring. Unfortunately these sweet-smelling flowers only last a day, but are attractive to bees and other pollinators. However, a short time later, oblong-shaped dark bluish-purple fruits appear in Mexico that taste sweet and are considered edible and snackable.
Myrtillocactus Geometrizans Pruning
Your Blue Myrtle cactus bush needs no pruning. Candlestick-style branches that constantly develop and grow are characteristic of this plant.
