- Pachycereus pringlei', also known as Mexican giant cardon' or elephant cactus, is a species of cactus native to California and Mexico. It is commonly known as 'cardón', a name derived from the Spanish word 'cardo' meaning 'thistle'.
- Its symbiotic relationship with the bacterial and fungal colonies in its roots allows this cactus to grow on rock even where there is no soil, as the P. They even round up symbiotic bacteria with cactus seeds
- An average mature cardon can reach a height of 10 meters (30 ft), but 18 meters (60 ft) tall ones are known. It is a slow growing plant with a lifespan measured in hundreds of years, but growth can be significantly increased in its early stages by inoculation with plant growth promoting bacteria such as Azospirillum species. Most adult cardons have several side branches that can be as large as the trunk. The resulting tree can reach a weight of 25 tons.
